The lack of truth in the American Media essays No one disputes the evidence that on March 19, 2003, President Bush targeted Saddam Husseins bunker in Baghdad and fired the shot heard - - or at least watched - - round the world. Usually topics like this are beyond disputation because the basic contours of the U.S. approach to war already seem clear. Presumably, this clarity and lack of contention is engrafted into the perspectives that we Americans obtain from our mainstream media. Has this coverage of the war in Iraq turned out to be truthful information or has it become a meaningful page-one dissection and exposure of the White Houses claims which can hardly be found in our mainstream media? First is the modern media, with its supposed extensive press coverage of the diplomatic phase, its hundreds of embedded journalists reporting in real time from the battleground, its worldwide network that goes after the story from many aspects, or its multifaceted CNNs on the Internet. Such diverse coverage must bring pride to the media on reporting the information and gathering the evidence that tells the story or proves the facts. Perhaps we are seeing this slant of media pride through a callow and ignorant position. Perhaps we are talking about structural errors or more precisely about intensive political and economic power. A good place to start changing this outlook would be in regard to the corporate media masters who do not see the world or this reality through democratic eyes and never will. The United States mainstream media institutions that filter and otherwise control such an immense share of the domesticated information could simply start by doing one thingby telling t he truth. The above quotation is from a club announcement. The words sneak peak certainly seem as if they ought to match, but the word peak is a misspelling in this context. The word meaning a surreptitious look is spelled peek. A peak is a projecting point. As I pointed out in English Spelling is Not Total Chaos, English has more phonograms (sound symbols) than it needs. This multiplicity of spellings applies especially to the vowel sounds. Long E is the vowel sound represented by the e in me. This long e sound can also be represented by five other phonograms: ee Achilles was wounded in his heel. The double e spelling ee always represents the long e sound: see, kneel, feel, tee (golf term). ea Physician, heal thyself. Long e is the most common sound represented by ea: read, zeal, appeal, deal, meal, real. (The spelling ea can also represent two other vowel sounds.) ei That man is filled with conceit. This ei spelling for long e occurs in words in which the ei follows the letter c: ceiling, conceit, perceive, receipt, receive. In 1492,Christopher Columbus and his three ships- the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria, arrived on the shores of San Salvador in the Caribbean. Lacking knowledge of geography, he believed that he had reached India but which was actually North America. (Livingston, 2010) However, after Columbusââ¬â¢ arrival in the Americas, the animal, plant, people, and bacterial life of these two worlds began to mix up. The arrival of Columbus brought wars, slavary and forced labor, the spreading of diseases caused at least 5 million deaths even worse. The contact between Europeans and North Americans brought Natives catastrophes and devastation that Europeans could never make up. Most importantly, the hidden disease brought by the Europeans caused massive amount of Natives to die. As the Spain, French, and English explorers came to America, diseases like small pox, malaria, chicken pox, influenza, measles, and yellow fever, the diseases that once killers that killed a great deal of Europeans, were brought to the new lands too. Walbert)Which were later called as ââ¬Å" The gift from Old to New Worldsâ⬠. (Kincheloe, 2007) As time passed, the Europeans were used to these diseases and gained immunity against them. However, the natives had never confront of these disease before, therefore they had no resistance to these illness, and their traditional cures didnââ¬â¢t work. These diseases killed as much as 90 percent of the native population, which means that only one in ten natives survived. Diseases like malaria and yellow fever were passed down from person to person from mosquitoes. When a particular region was affected, the disease would usually spread out rapidly. Also, natives could easily get the diseases when traded with one another. Other diseases could be transmitted throught the livestocks brought by the Europeans. For example, cattle passes measles and small pox; pigs pass influenza; chicken pass malaria. Native hunters and gatherers could get the diseases when they were in touch with the animals. Thomas Harriot, an English explorer, witnessed the natives suffered from the diseases and wrote the following paragraph in his jornal, ââ¬Å"Within a few days after our departure from every such [Indian] town, the people began to die very fast, and many in short space; in some towns about twenty, in some forty, in some sixty, in one six score [6 x 20 = 120], which in truth was very many in respect of their numbers. . . . The disease was also so strange that they neither knew what it was nor how to cure it. â⬠(Kincheloe, 2007) Harriotââ¬â¢s paragraph clearly stated that the natives died in large amount everyday. Lostln Revery said in her article: The transmission of the diseases caused more devastation in the New World than the Black Death had done in Europe. In addition, the coming of European also brought up a new kind of trade-the slave trade, which cost hundreds and thousands of native men and women forced to be taken away. (Walbert)Dr. Calvin Lawrence Jr. wrote the following paragraph in Coloumbus Day 2012: Hero, Villain, or Both?. ââ¬Å" Columbus is an obvious target of scorn and resentment for Native Americans whose fortunes declined precipitously in the aftermath of his journey to the New World. He and his men also brutalized people of the West Indies and enslaved others. â⬠He interpeted how Columbus and his crew treated the native slaves. According to the passage, the settlers treated the native slaves ruthlessly and unfairly. As the number of settlers increased, more and more buildings like housings were needed. Settlers needed workers to do chores such as building the houses and working of planation. Settlers later found out that they could sell tools, firearms, metal knives, axes, ammunition, alchohol, furs and cloths to the natives. Kincheloe, 2007) In return, they would bring them other natives they captured in tribal wars. Those warslaves were sold to the settlers as slavery. The idea of slavery had already occur before Europeans arrived. The natives adopted the idea of holding slaves as chattel property. Those slaves were usually enslaved war captives and were used for small- scale labor or rutual sacrifices. Little records stated that the slave holders viewed the slavess racially inferior from other tribes. However, most slaves would slowly equalized into the tribes to replace dead warriors. After European marched in, it caused a change in Native American slavery, as they created a new market. At first, the settlers only bought slaves from other tribes and used them as workers. As time passed, the demand increased, colonists in the South began to capture natives. The natives were used as labors to cultivate tobacco, rice, or indigo, which is a type of dye. Therefore, the population of natives decreased swiftly due to forced labor. Settlers even encouraged natives to go against each other to triggered them into war, their objectives were to weaken the warring tribes and increase the number of slaves. Furthermore, the misunderstood and conflict between Europeans and Native Americans usaully lead to war that led to massacres of native villages. For example, the conflict between settlers and the Pequot tribe that was centered along the Pequot River, called The Pequot War. (Pequot War) The natives believed that the land were sacred and they were closely linked with the lands. The idea of ââ¬Å"owningâ⬠land did not exit among the Native Americans. They lived on the land, but didnââ¬â¢t consider that they owned it. When European immigrated in their lands, the Native Americans welcomed them and were willing to share the lands with them. Nonetheless, the Europeans took advantages of the natives and started to take over their land. The points of anxiety included unfair trading, the sale of alcohol, and the destruction of Pequot crops. Eventually, it led to the first war between natives and Europeans on the continent. In 1636, European trader called John Oldham was killed by the Pequot. The incident triggered the leader of settlers, John Endicott, to seek retaliations. The Europeans then cooperated with the Narragansett, the rival of the Pequot. In May 1637, more than 500 Pequot people were burned down or hunted down, and the chief was the executed. The village was massacred. Historians considered this as a shameful period of history. The other example was the conflict between the Southern Tuscaroas tribe and the settlers in 1715. The war was later called The Tuscarora War. The European Setllers that lived in North Carolina had lived in peace with the natives for over 50 years. The chief of the Southern Tuscarora, Chief Hancock, later found his villages often assaulted and his people frequently kidnapped and sold as slaves. Chief Hancock felt that there were no alternative but to go against the settlers. Chief Hancock teamed up with other tribes and attakced the planters on the Roanoke River. Hundreds of settlers were killed. Governor force then attacked the Southern Tuscarora and other tribes in return. Hundrerd and thousands of Tuscarora were killed or made prisoners. As the result, the majority of Southern Tuscarora began migrating to New York to escape the setttlers. Due to the natives were mostly lack of armed force and resources, also weaken by diseases, they were nearly always unsucessful in wars. In conclusion, the contact between European and American caused the population of natives to reduce fastly. The Europeans thought they were the superior culture that brought civilization to the inferior culture. Since they were armed with better weapon, natives were in an inferior postion. Although the settlers did make progress for the natives, they still caused a great deal of nativeââ¬â¢s death. European imperialism of America changed the culture and lives of natives permanently and resulted in genocide of natives. The most deadly reason of nativeââ¬â¢s death is the disease they brought from the old world. The settlers brought in a number of kinds diseases that were fetal and took away a great deal of nativeââ¬â¢s life. As the settlers increased, more and more laborers were needed. Natives were captured and sold as slaves to work for the settlers. However,the settlers didnââ¬â¢t treat the natives well and overworked the natives. Lastly, the war between natives and settlers was also one of the reason that natives deceaded. Settlers from European countries armed with better weapons that natives couldnââ¬â¢t compete. As the result, the natives were mostly defeated in battles. To sum up, the contact between Europeans and Native Americans ked to a demographic disaster of unprecedented proportions. Interview Report: Leadership in the Healthcare System Essay -- Intervi
Introduction Leadership is increasingly important in today's society. Many experts and scholars point out that the current leadership crisis concerns moral and character problems in many leaders (Ahn, Ettner, & Loupin, 2012; Callahan, 2004; Wright & Quick, 2011). The following interview report is intended primarily for exploration and comparison of the traits and characteristics of leadership. A leader of a clinical medicine centre was interviewed for this report. The purpose of this report is to explore the leadership characters and traits, and how they can be developed in this turbulent environment. First, I make a brief introduction regarding the background of the respondent and her working environment. The report also describes this leader's personal and subjective perceptions in relation to a literature review which investigates the traits and characteristics of leadership. The report concludes with a comparison and discussion of the results of the clinical condition on the basis of the int erview and literature review. At the same time, the report aims to put forward feasible and effective advice and specific programs for present and future leaders and managers in the health care system. Methodology 1. The respondentââ¬â¢s traits and characteristics This is a nearly 40-minute interview. The object of this interview is the leader of a community medical centre. This medical centre has five physicians, two nutritionists, one occupational therapist, a nurse and three service desk receptionists. Poetry from Anthology
In this essay I will be exploring how the poets expressed their views in a strong and effective way. I shall be writing about three poems. â⬠¢ Base Details by Siegfried Sassoon â⬠¢ On the life of man by Walter Raleigh â⬠¢ Those bastards in their mansions by Simon Armitage Base Details Siegfried Sassoon In this essay I will be describing the contrasts and explore the attitude of the poet in a strong and effective way. This poem is written by Siegfried Sassoon, who was a soldier during the First World War. He used the majors and the soldiers as protagonists of this poem.The poet has described the physical attributes of the majors who would stay at the base, because they were fat, short of breath. Siegfried uses number of abusive and mockery words to describe their behaviour towards one another. In the beginning of the poem the poet says that heââ¬â¢d live in with the majors at the base. He used abusive and mockery words to describe the physical attributes they posses. Th e poet says that ââ¬Å"Baldâ⬠, ââ¬Å"short of breathâ⬠and ââ¬Å"scarletâ⬠. The word ââ¬Å"baldâ⬠means that they didnââ¬â¢t have any hair on their head, and ââ¬Å"short of breathâ⬠refers towards their shape and body figure.The lexisâ⬠scarletâ⬠has a lot of meanings, but in their case it means that they were guilty. The majors were the main reason for the death of the soldiers. These three words highlight the characteristics of them, as well as it was mentioned in the first two lines of the poem. Afterwards, Siegfried immediately talks about the soldiers whose fate was inevitably a fateful misery. The author observes the fact that, they were active and they used to get forced towards the frontline. This is evidenced from the poem he states that: ââ¬â ââ¬Å"And speed glum heroes up the line to deathâ⬠.Nevertheless, since they met their fate bravely and gave their life in the war, this made them a true hero. Additionally, the poet goes back to the description of the majorââ¬â¢s actions. So the poet uses the word ââ¬Å"Guzzleâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Gulpâ⬠in the ââ¬Å"best hotelâ⬠. In this context the poet describes that the poet himself and the majors would eat and drink in an excessive manner. Therefore the word ââ¬Å"guzzleâ⬠means to eat in an excessive manner, and the word ââ¬Å"gulpâ⬠to drink in an excessive manner as it makes a gulping sound, therefore the poet used them two word to make it effective.Moreover, since the war is still happening the majors would continuously eat and drink. To such an extent that the poet has described their faces as ââ¬Å"Puffyâ⬠and ââ¬Å"petulantâ⬠, the poet has used the mockery words again to describe the majors. The word ââ¬Å"puffyâ⬠means that they would be fat and ââ¬Å"petulantâ⬠means to be swollen. Afterwards he uses the sarcasm attitude towards the soldiers by stating: ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Poor young chap, Roll of Honou r is an alliteration which the poet has used. Iââ¬â¢d sayâ⬠.Heââ¬â¢d say ââ¬Å"poor young chapâ⬠to show their grief towards the soldiers, and ââ¬Å"Roll of Honourâ⬠is a faceless list of names of the soldiers. In reality the majors werenââ¬â¢t really cared for them whilst they were burying the soldiers. Nevertheless, after burying them they would continue their sarcastic conversations about their innocent soldiers. Siegfried proofs this from the poem he says that ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢d say I used to know his father well; yes, weââ¬â¢ve lost heavily in this scrapâ⬠. This shows up their fake and strong relationship between them. He also mentions the word ââ¬Å"scrapâ⬠to describe the war.The majors would describe this war as a scrap. This war means nothing to them, regardless theyââ¬â¢ve lost heavily amount of soldiers. This part of the poem is a technique of euphemisms. This war was like a board games, how a player would sacrifice a counter to g ain victory. In conclusion, the poet gives a scenario or a clear contrast of the soldiers and the majors. Theyââ¬â¢d be scattered everywhere. I mean that the majors would ââ¬Å"toddleâ⬠due to their fat and overeating. Therefore theyââ¬â¢d walk slowly and safely, since they are not at the battlefield.On the other side, the soldiers would be ââ¬Å"stone deadâ⬠; this means that they would be still dead at the battlefield. Finally, the rhyming scheme of this poem is (ab, ab, cd, ee,). Also the last two lines of this poem is known asâ⬠Rhyming Coupletâ⬠. Since they rhyme at the end and those two words are ââ¬Å"deadâ⬠and ââ¬Å"bedâ⬠. Those Bastards in their mansions Simon Armitage This poem is written by Simon Armitage, he has dedicated this poem towards the poor people, and this poem is from the collection of ââ¬Ëtaking a standââ¬â¢. This poem features the division between the poor and the rich.Simon Armitage is totally against it; therefo re he is taking a stand protecting the poor from the rich. Thus, I will be explaining this poem. Firstly, the author is referring the rich people as ââ¬Ëbastardsââ¬â¢ which is on the first line of the poem, because if there was to be a poor walking in front of their house they would ask each other ââ¬Å"who is he? â⬠, ââ¬Å"why is he dressed in that manner? â⬠where is he from? â⬠etc. Thatââ¬â¢s why the author referred them as ââ¬Ëbastardsââ¬â¢. In this situation the rich people would be alarmed and clutch their possessions closer.After while, he says that he would save the poor masses and protect them from different kind of destruction, and bring them a form of benefit. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢d poisoned the dogs and vaulted the ditchesâ⬠gives a form of proof from the poem itself. Moreover, there state is really ragged because not only thereââ¬â¢s a division between them, the poor people would also get oppressed by the rich. Thus, Simon Armitage de cides to break through the front door, it is also evidenced form the fifth line of first stanza, so that he would bring them benefit.This is clearly observed in line six. â⬠The gift of fire from the burning torches. These properties are like gift thus he used the word ââ¬Ëgiftââ¬â¢ to show the preciousness of it. This part of the poem refers towards the Greek mythology about Prometheus and Zeus. Prometheus was Greek God and also the first god to create human beings. Not only that he stole fire from Zeus and distributed it towards the whole of humanity. Zeus became really furious, upon knowing that Prometheus gave a precious element to the mankind.Therefore, Zeus punished Prometheus by chaining him to the peak of a mountain, so that everyday eagles would peck from his liver. Since, Prometheus was immortal each night his liver would grow back. Nevertheless, after distributing the properties he would teach them how to get rid off themselves from the great oppression and how to take a stand against the cruelty of the rich. Thereafter, since they donââ¬â¢t have any weapons to face against the rich, what they would do is that they would use the same chains and shackles which they were tied by.They use those chains to take a stand against the rich and break the division of the privileged ones and the non-privileged ones. In conclusion, the poet is alarming himself bravely in the second line of third stanza that ââ¬Å"theyââ¬â¢d have me sniffed out by their beaglesâ⬠. Simon speaks regarding their troops of dogs, which the rich would keep to guard their properties. Since in the beginning of the poem talks about poisoning the dogs, therefore the dogs certainly will be able to catch and heââ¬â¢ll get imprisoned as well as face other severe consequences.But on the last stanza he says that ââ¬Å"me, I stick to the shadows carry a gunâ⬠, here the poet clearly and bravely shows himself that heââ¬â¢s fearless and heââ¬â¢d hide himself fr om those bastards in their mansions. On the life of Man Sir Walter Raleigh This poem has been written about the life, by using extended metaphor throughout the poem. It also gives a bit of idea by looking at its title. It has been written by Sir Walter Raleigh. He has expressed his attitude and his views towards this life as a form of ââ¬ËSacrificeââ¬â¢. There are other numerous views regarding this life.I will be exploring his attitude in a strong and effective way. In the beginning, Sir Walter Raleigh asks a rhetorical question that ââ¬Å"What is Lifeâ⬠. Then he gives immediate response by saying ââ¬Å"A play of Passionâ⬠. He asserts that God is watching us sharply, thus he quotes ââ¬Å"Heaven the judicious sharp spectator isâ⬠, he is using metaphor to make God as our audience. The poet strongly believes that he will get accounted for whatever he does in this life. Group Working Skills
There are increasingly more people considering that group work is quite significant. Group work may be defined as a mode of cooperative learning, it aims to develop students' knowledge, cater for individual differences, generic skills and attitudes. Whether students are studying or employees are working, group work is able to demonstrate their comprehensive skills. Nonetheless, other people state that group work enables them too dependent on others, and gradually were losing the ability to think by themselves; whereas my conviction is that group work allows students to learn team working skills.Furthermore, it helps students training their sense of responsibility. In this essay, I will analyses how our group performs, regarding roles and cohesiveness. Regarding roles, which can be defined as people have a common goal when they work together, it also occurs in students groups. Each individual group member will have a particular position and function in it. Roles consist of group task roles, group maintenance roles and self-seeking roles. Group task roles are related to accomplish tasks and to achieve goals of the group.In my academic career I have taken part in several groups. Actually, I now play the part of evaluator. For instance, my group ember gives me some advice; I decide which ideas are good or bad. This is important because I will receive a good deal of ideas from my partner; it provides our group with the opportunity have a choice process. This helps our group to achieve are student group need to beware of pursuing the task at the expense of maintaining relationships. â⬠This meaner, group maintenance roles are linked to interpersonal relationships.In my group I play the role of harmonies, my responsibility is conflict- resolving. the sin of avarice essays In life everyone is searching for something or someone. Sometimes we just do not realize we have found it until it is too late. What we find may not always be what we are looking for. This is what happens in the Pardoners Tale by Geoffry Chaucer, the three rioters are searching for death in the physical form. They do find death or rather it finds them in the very end of the story. In my opinion the three men do not find what they are searching for but that death finds them, in a place they never thought to look, in the depth of the human soul. The Pardoners Tale begins with three men in a drunken rage swearing to find death after it steals another one of their friends. If we can only catch him, Death is dead(Chaucer 117). They take an oath to always stick up for one another no matter what, and then they continue on with their search. They come upon and old man who may be death himself. The men are so anxious to find death that they do not see death when they are staring it in the face. Their drunken stupor makes them blind and easily allows death to trick them. The old man tells them where to find death: ...turn up this crooked way/towards that groove...under a tree and there youll find him waiting(Chaucer 117). So they continue their quest. Under the tree they find gold florins. No longer was it death these fellows sought or so they thought (Chaucer 118). When the rioters do find the gold it dissolves their oath of brotherhood and puts them on their path to death. The gold immediately changes their plan of finding death to becoming rich. The sin of gluttony takes over in each man planning to kill the next. The old man, his words, and their pursuit are completely forgotten. How to write HR policies How to write HR policies If you need to update your HR policies because of the new Equality Act 2010, now could be a golden opportunity to make them a lot better. The Equality Act brings together legislation regarding discrimination and harassment into a single Act. Since it came into force on 1 October, many HR departments have been busy updating some of their policies. A well-written policy document will leave both employee and employer clear on where they stand, and ideally knowing that where they stand is somewhere that is fair, organised, consistent and protected by law. But whenever legalities are involved in writing, it can be all too easy to slip into legalese typically overlong, complicated sentences. Naturally, its important to be legally compliant. But if no-one can understand a word, the document might as well go in the shredder. Maybe its time to reach for the red pen. Reader-centred policies Follow these tips and youll be sure to have well-written policies. Shorten sentences When youre trying to abide by legislation, it can be easy to get carried away and try to fit far too much information into a sentence, which will keep building, and building (much like this one), interrupted only by commas, and most probably gasps for breath. This can be very unforgiving on the reader, as they try to hold on to the train of thought even as it speeds away from them (quite possibly under attack from cowboys and Native Americans). For example: Indirect discrimination, where an apparently neutral provision, criterion or practice would put a substantially higher proportion of the members of one sex, or persons having a racial or ethnic origin, or a particular religion or belief, or a particular disability or a particular sexual orientation, or age group at a particular disadvantage compared with other persons unless that provision, criterion or practice is objectively justified by a legitimate aim and the means of achieving that aim are appropriate and necessary. When writing, if possible, stick to the principle: one sentence, one idea. Bullet points can also be useful for breaking up list-like points, though dont overuse them. In this example, it would be better to list the protected characteristics (sex, race, age, etc) separately, then go on to define indirect discrimination. Indirect discrimination: when a rule, condition or practice that applies to everyone disadvantages someone with a particular protected characteristic. But this wont be classed as discrimination if the aim and means behind the rule, condition or practice can be objectively justified as legitimate and necessary. Verbs over nouns Using verbs makes language dynamic, which will move things along at a good pace and keep the reader interested. Particularly heavy-going reading arises with the overuse of nominalisations. This is a noun that has been created from a verb, like recommendation (verb = recommend). It may be a rather hypocritical word for us to use here (it is, itself, a nominalisation), and a practice to avoid. It tends to attract unnecessary words and makes your writing pretty dull. Compare: Undertaking the implementation of the policy is the duty of all with Implementing the policy is everyones duty. Keep it active Writing tends to be more interesting in the active voice. Your equality policy probably still wont win the Booker Prize, but at least it is more likely to be read. The active voice is when the doer in the sentence is put before the action they are carrying out. It is generally better than the passive voice (where the doer can be left out altogether). This is because it sounds more human, forces you to be more specific, and leaves no doubt about who will do what. It also usually results in shorter sentences. For example: Passive: A risk assessment will be undertaken before any disabled person begins work and, where doubts exist over a disabled persons ability to perform the full duties of the job concerned, a trial period may be offered after consultation with the HR department. Active: We will carry out a risk assessment before any disabled person begins work. We may offer a trial period if we have any doubts over the persons ability to perform the full duties of the job concerned. And finally, easy on the legalese Legalese is often found in documents like policies. Perhaps its used out of habit, or in an attempt to cover every possible contingency. A lawyer may argue that its employed to be precise and utterly unambiguous. And indeed it might be, except that often no-one but a lawyer can understand the results (complete incomprehensibility may be different from ambiguity, but is hardly better). Since a policy document will have legal implications, it is worth getting a lawyers sign-off on it. But work with them to avoid the common problems of legalese. In addition to the ones outlined above, try to avoid muddying the waters with unnecessary, archaic words, like therein, herein, forthwith, and aforesaid. The goal is for every employee in the company to understand the documents. The wording should be suitable for the average layperson (unless, of course, it is a legal firm), so that everyone really is on an equal footing.

Without another chance, these persons find difficulty in accepting the closeness of death and overcome with resentment, defeat, and hopelessness. These attitudes expressed as anger and contempt for others disguising contempt for oneself. These persons tend to have a faultfinding behavior with a tendency to blame others for their personal failures. They also have regretful view of their own life reflecting with a great sense of despair. These people will just lie down on their beds and start complaining.
